Kashaya is an ayurvedic herbal drink that is offered to guests in every havyaka's house. In fact, we are grown up having kashaya every day after breakfast as a routine. Kashaya is basically a milk-based decoction of certain herbs and spices that are used regularly in the kitchen. Kashaya is an immunity booster, regular intake of which will keep you away from any upper respiratory infections. During these times of # Covid-19 scare, having kashaya daily can be one of the traditional preventive care. Even, our Ayush ministry protocol talks about these herbs as immunity boosters. Let's take a look at this easy kashaya powder recipe -

Main Ingredients

  • Coriander seeds - 1 cup
  • Cumin seeds - 1/2 cup
  • Fennel seeds - 1/2 cup
  • Whole cardamom (with peel) - 7 to 8
  • Black pepper - 2 tbsp
  • Dried ginger - 2 inch
  • Dried turmeric root - 1 inch

Other Ingredients ( to be added in very small quantity)

Hippili, Jyeshta Madhu, Ashwagandha, Neggina mullu, and Vayu Vidanga. But, these ingredients are optional.

Method

  1. Dry roast every ingredient separately. 
  2. Grind all the roasted ingredients together in the mixer grinder
  3. Mix the powder well. Kashaya powder is ready for use!
  4. Store it in an airtight container. The powder can be used for months.

How to prepare kashaya?

Make kashaya decoction by boiling a cup of water mixed with a spoon of kashaya powder and sugar (optional). Rock sugar is used traditionally in kashaya as it can relieve cough and sore throat. add a little milk to the kashaya decoction and bring it to boil. Strain and serve kashaya when it's hot!
