Tambuli is a yogurt-based cuisine which is served with rice. In havyakas, it's a tradition to start the meal with something made out of curd or buttermilk as it keeps your stomach cool. Tambuli can be prepared with various kinds of herbs/roots/vegetable ground with certain spices and fresh coconut.

Nellikai Tambuli is one of the commonly prepared tambuli especially during winter after 'tulsi puja' as fresh fruits will be available during the season. However, nellikai/amla can be sun-dried and stored for making tambuli anytime. As we all know, amla is a widely used medicinal herb in Ayurveda as an immunity booster, anti-aging and for many. Try this easy and simple nellikai tambuli



Ingredients

  • Nellikai/Gooseberry - 2 to 3 
  • Black pepper - 6 to 8
  • Cumin seeds - 1/2 tbsp
  • Freshly grated coconut - 3 to 4 tbsp
  • Ghee - 1/2 tbsp
  • Buttermilk- 2 cups/whisked curd - 1cup
  • Water for grinding

Seasoning (optional)

  • Ghee - 1/2 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2tbsp
  • Pinch of asafoetida
  • Curry leaves - 5-6

Method

  1. Roast black pepper and cumin seeds in ghee
  2. Grind grated coconut and de-seeded nellikai with roasted spices
  3. Strain the grounded mixture and add buttermilk/whisked curd to the strained juice
  4. Add salt as per the taste
  5. Season it with mustard, curry leaves, and asafoetida roasted in ghee
  6. Tambuli is ready to be served with steamed rice!
